Kinari Webb, MD, Health In Harmony’s Founder and President, was invited to present her talk Chainsaws and Stethoscopes at the recent TEDx conference in Jakarta, joining a group of Indonesian leaders speaking on diverse topics. At the conference, Kinari shared her story of how a near-death experience provided a new outlook on life, and gave her a new vantage point — and new momentum in pursuing a global vision of environmental stewardship. Watch Chainsaws and Stethoscopes now to learn more about the core concept that inspired her to create Health In Harmony.
Kinari has dedicated herself to forest conservation in Indonesian Borneo since 1993. What she’ll tell you she discovered was that "trading rainforest protection for things the community wanted… good healthcare facilities and training in organic farming, which served as an alternative to traditional slash-and-burn techniques" just worked. Today, Health In Harmony’s program partner, ASRI, provides quality health care, eliminating a primary driver of local logging practices, and provides training in organic farming, as a more profitable and sustainable alternative to traditional slash-and-burn agriculture. Health In Harmony views these efforts as our way of saying “thank you” to the communities of West Kalimantan and in the future, communities of the world, for their efforts to protect an endangered global resource.
Now, there is greater urgency and momentum than ever in pursuing a global vision of environmental stewardship. We invite you to become a part of the momentum when you watch Chainsaws & Stethoscopes. Join the conversation and tell us what you think. Let’s work together to change the face of global health.
