Where We've Been (And Where We're Going!)

The Health In Harmony Board of Directors and staff.

These past few weeks have been an exciting time in the Health In Harmony office – or rather, out of the office! We want to share some of the highlights of what we’ve been up to:

Early morning at the board retreat.

The first weekend of November, our staff gathered in Northern California with our Board of Directors for our annual board retreat. It’s a rare treat  -- once a year! -- when we all get together, and we relish the opportunity to spend face-to-face time with our diverse and dedicated board.  The two days of meetings and presentations facilitated by Nick Viele for the third year equaled an exciting time of affirmation and transition. A renewed commitment to mission and celebration of new leaders – Cat Celosse was elected to serve as Board Chair --  allowed HIH’s long-serving and fabulous Board Chair, Dr. Alison Norris to step down.  After the retreat, Alison jetted off to make two presentations at the Population Health & Environment Conference in Ethiopia, one of which was by invitation to present Health In Harmony’s work and 2007-2012 Community Impact Survey.  Everyone came away reinvigorated and inspired in the face of continuing threats to our precious planet and all that call this place home.

Most exciting was having our founder, Dr. Kinari Webb, back with us in the United States! Since her near-fatal encounter with a box jellyfish two years ago (see her TEDx talk for the full story), her health has not allowed her to do extensive traveling. We’re happy to report that she is doing much better now! Her presence and energy were inspiring.

On Monday, November 4th, we celebrated Kinari’s return to the US with a reception in San Francisco. It was generously sponsored by former board member Tim Waters and friend Lou Giraudo, who provided the space in his waterfront restaurant, Boudin’s. We had a wonderful night with friends and supporters, and raised over $5,000!

Now Kinari is taking Health In Harmony’s vision on the road with a series of lectures and house parties around the Northwest. Last night, she was warmly welcomed to Seattle with a house party and presentation at the home of board member Darin Collins, DVM – a big thank you to everyone who attended! This upcoming week will be very busy: if you’re in Olympia or Portland, there will be multiple opportunities to hear Kinari share how project partner ASRI is working to end poverty and environmental degradation in Borneo.
