We asked our partners at Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI) about the impact of the recent earthquake in Indonesia. Below is the response sent from Nur Febriani, ASRI's Executive Director:
Dear brothers and sisters at Health in Harmony,
I am sure you have heard about the recent big disaster in Indonesia.
On September 28, an earthquake measuring 7.4 on Richter scale devastated Palu, Central Sulawesi. Then, a tsunami as high as 6 meters (20 feet) hit Palu and the surrounding area. Unfortunately, the earthquake also caused soil liquefaction -which occurs in saturated loose soil that is suddenly shaken.
Sadly, according to the BNPB (National Disaster Management Agency), 1,558 people are confirmed dead and the death toll is expected to rise. Over 80,000 people are displaced and more than 65,000 homes are damaged or even destroyed.
Please keep the response and rehabilitation efforts on the ground in your hearts.
